One of the major issues hampering the development of horticulture in Tanzania as a whole and small scale producers in particular is a general lack of ready access to profitable markets. TAHA, acting through its Marketing Department, has been working tirelessly to secure reliable profitable markets and to ensure that producers are linked with these markets on a sustainable basis. In the months of January to March this year, we witnessed a substantial increase in production from TAHA member farmers with an overall exchange of goods valued at Tsh1.8 billion. [Please see the illustration below for graphic detail]. The goods were fresh vegetables and fruits – mainly butternut, capsicum, watermelons, tomatoes, passion fruits, cucumbers, cabbages, onions and carrots – which were sourced from 306 farmers, mostly the Association’s members located in Dar es Salaam, Pwani, Morogoro, Kilimanjaro, Tanga, Dodoma, Manyara and Arusha Administrative Regions.
